Thomas
McCarthy was born in 1954 and was educated at
University College Cork. He was fellow of the
International Writing Program, University of Iowa in
1978/1979. His collections of poems include: The Sorrow Garden
(1981), The Non-aligned Storyteller (1984),
Seven Winters in Paris (1989), The Lost Province
(1996), Merchant Prince (2005), and
The Last Geraldine Officer
(2009). He has won many prizes including the Patrick
Kavanagh Award, the Alice Hunt Bartlett Prize, the
O'Shaughnessy Poetry Award and the Annual Literary Award
of the American-Ireland Fund. He is a former editor of
The Cork Review and The Poetry Ireland Review.
He is a public librarian by profession and has worked at
Cork City Libraries for over 30 years.
